The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers, particularly in
Indiana
and
Kentucky
, of a recent telephone scam. The
scam begins with a caller who intends to fool people into believing
that the IRS will be issuing a tax refund and medical card.
"All you have to do," says the scammer, “is
provide some personal information."
The caller, posing as an IRS employee, states that the IRS has a tax
refund that will be issued each month for the next six months and
that a medical card is also being sent for use by the entire family.
The caller then proceeds to ask for bank account information.
"Scammers are using tax refunds and medical cards as a hook to
lure people into disclosing their financial information," said
Jodie Reynolds, a spokesperson for the IRS in
Indianapolis
.
The IRS urges people who get these questionable calls not
to provide personal and financial information.
You may report the fraudulent misuse of the IRS name, logo, forms,
or other IRS property by calling the Treasury Inspector General for
Tax Administration (TIGTA) toll-free hotline at 1-800-366-4484 or
visiting www.ustreas.gov/tigta.
