Increased
federal minimum wage
The federal minimum
wage is now $5.85 per hour, effective July 24, 2007.
This is the first of three annual 70-cent increases:
-
$5.85
per hour on July 24, 2007
-
$6.55
per hour on July 24, 2008
-
$7.25
per hour on July 24, 2009
|
The
federal minimum wage has not increased since 1997.
More than 30
states had already established minimum wages
above the $5.15 an hour level, including
Ohio’s minimum wage of $6.85 per hour, which increased to
$7.00 per hour on January 1, 2008. The
state of Indiana
has maintained the federal minimum. Some
states are still considering increasing their minimum wage levels above
the new federal standards.
Employees will
be aware of this new standard, so you should be, too.
The recent increase in wage-related lawsuits indicates that
employees are already aware of their wage-and-hour rights.
This new law will only increase that awareness.
